Coaching
It’s not traditional for musicians to work on their stage presence. One of the reasons is that all the instruction focuses on the musical craft. I think most have experienced distraction from a better or worse stage presence and therefore forget the music. The goal of my coaching is to get the scene’s perception to come together with the music and the musician, so that the public feels that the music is interesting to listen to and “watch”.
My coaching is based on two priorities: the first is to correct the mistakes we musicians commonly make on stage, because this diverts attention away from music. The second is to teach musicians to improve their stage presence, so that they can get beyond edge of the stage without focus disappearing from the music.
With my background as both professional musician and an actor is my coaching tailored to musicians. The coaching takes inspiration from both worlds, but contrary to what many musicians fear, it has nothing to do with theater. On the contrary – an actor must play a role, a musician should not.
An actor must play a role, a musician should not, because it is the music itself which plays a role. The musician’s most important role is to back a musician up.
The techniques I collects from actors world has been adapted, so that they fit into the music industry.
In my Coaching we are working with the following:
- How to get beyond the stage edge.
- How your scene presence will be relaxed and natural.
- How does one catch the public’s attention in one owns way.
- What the band/orchestra in the Community can do to make a better stage presence.
- How the band/ orchestra can support each other on scene.
Methodology and philosophy of teaching
My coaching is based on both theoretical and practical exercises, which include recorded video. Many exercises take place on stage, so you can feel and see what change can do for both the personal expression and music.
The philosophy behind my coaching is that everybody must understand it. Stage appearances are a big and exciting – but also sensitive – area to work with. So I think it is important that the coaching is down to earth and easy to understand.
There are no rules for how you should be on stage.
There are rules about what to do for the music.
